Curaçao Through My Eyes: A Local’s Guide to the Island’s Heart & Soul Curaçao is more than just a destination—it’s an experience, a feeling, a rhythm that pulses through every street, every wave, and every bite of local cuisine. As a passionate “Yu di Kòrsou”, I’ve spent my life not only exploring every corner of this island but also immersing myself in its culture, traditions, and hidden gems that many visitors never get to see. Let me take you on a journey through the Curaçao I know and love—the places that make this island feel like home.
Morning Magic: Sunrise and Serenity For me, the perfect morning begins at St. Joris Bay, one of the island’s best-kept secrets. Here, the sunrise transforms the landscape into a painting of gold and pink hues, while the wind carries the scent of salt and adventure. It’s my go- to spot for hiking, meditation, and yoga—where the energy of the island feels most raw and healing. Curaçao, after all, is an island of healing, where nature and spirit intertwine effortlessly.
Hidden Culinary Treasures: A Taste of the Real Curaçao
Food is storytelling, and Curaçao’s cuisine tells tales of resilience, history, and creativity. I always say that a perfect meal should be a karnaval to my senses. I will tell you more about Karnaval in a bit.
- On a Sunday, you may find me at Marshe di Barber, a bustling small local market where you can sip on homemade awa di lamunchi (lime water) and enjoy dishes that have been passed down through generations—think stewed goat, funchi, and fresh coconut sweets.
- For those seeking plant-based delights, the Vegan Market is a vibrant community gathering where creativity meets sustainability.
Art, Culture, and the Beat of the Island
Wandering through Otrobanda is like stepping into a living gallery. The colorful murals, hidden alleyways, and artistic energy make it one of my favorite places to get lost in. The walls whisper stories of our past, our struggles, and our celebrations.
And speaking of celebrations—Karnaval is in my blood. From the moment the music starts, my feet can’t help but move! I have been a part of this vibrant festival for years, and I am already preparing to dance my heart out next year. It’s the ultimate expression of Curaçao’s joy, unity, and cultural pride.
Off-the-Beaten-Path Adventures
If you think you’ve seen Curaçao, think again. Some of the most breathtaking experiences lie beyond the tourist hotspots:
- Paddleboarding through the Jan Thiel salt flats is a surreal, peaceful experience where flamingos glide beside you, and the water mirrors the sky.
- Sunrise hike of the Tafelberg, The journey begins in darkness, with only the whisper of the wind and the crunch of gravel underfoot breaking the silence. Tafelberg, Curaçao’s majestic flat-topped mountain, like a sleeping giant waits to reveal its secrets to those willing to make the climb. (There is also a Full Moon hike)
A few other noteworthy experiences (to complete the 15 requested)
Playa Canoa, Kabrietenberg Hiking, Jeremi hiking trail, Seru manzinga (Unexpected spectacular hike and view of rock formation), New restaurant: Mondi Lodge, Hofi Mango for nature and grounding experience, Refreshing coconut water at “Patron” in Ambrahamz/Rondeklip, Fresh Catch of the day at Visboer
Why I’m the Perfect Candidate
I don’t just live in Curaçao—I breathe it, celebrate it, and share it with everyone I meet. As a Communication Manager at the island’s only General Hospital, I am deeply connected to the community, and as a passionate storyteller, I love bringing Curaçao’s soul to life. I have explored the island’s hidden gems, tasted its most authentic flavors, danced in its most joyous moments, and embraced both its high-energy adventures and its tranquil, spiritual side.
Curaçao is my home, my heartbeat, my inspiration—and I can’t wait to share its magic with the world.
